Ad Reproduction Attempt

Here is my attempt at recreating the lighting seen in this magazine photo.

The main light was high above and to the left of the camera diffused through an umbrella.  A second flash was used from the lower right to add some fill to dark areas.  However, now that I look at the magazine photo, they may not have used a second flash because her legs cast no shadows like mine do.  Perhaps I should have not used a second flash or diffused the second flash more, which would have eliminated the sharp shadow lines.

Studium/Punctum

This photograph by Dorothea Lange is my favorite. The background is a studium, which seems an old town day after raining. For me, the girl (or maybe boy) chasing the car is a punctum, which makes me think why she is running toward car.

This is a photo I took this morning, when the sun rose. I took this at 7am from the 6th floor of Talbot. Punctum in this photo is the sun for me. It still remains even I close my eyes. Chapel and other building works well as Studium.

Punctum- Drew Johnson

This is a photograph from 1x.com. The overall feel of it, or the studium gives a off a generally creepy and weird feeling. The punctum for me is that the man's feet are off the ground making it seem like he is perched on the stool just like the crow. Another punctum is that the crow has a letter wrapped around its leg. It's mysterious and keeps me interested.

This is a photograph a sculpture in the painting studio. The studium is a feeling of childhood being watched over. The punctum for me is the tattered edges where the door is cut. The edges give the picture uncertainty or a "work in progress" feel.

Punctum

This image was taken in Cinque Terre, Italy from the balcony of the small apartment I stayed in. The punctum for me is the small orange buoys floating in the water. They draw your attention to the water in the small inlet and raise questions as to their purpose. Do they serve a safety purpose for swimmers? Are they used for fishing?

This image by Dorothea Lange presents a more personal punctum. The wrinkled and sun-dried knuckles of the cotton picker "prick" me in the sense that they remind me of my grandfather's hands.
