Ad Reproduction Attempt

Here is my attempt at recreating the lighting seen in this magazine photo.

The main light was high above and to the left of the camera diffused through an umbrella.  A second flash was used from the lower right to add some fill to dark areas.  However, now that I look at the magazine photo, they may not have used a second flash because her legs cast no shadows like mine do.  Perhaps I should have not used a second flash or diffused the second flash more, which would have eliminated the sharp shadow lines.

Studium/Punctum

This photograph by Dorothea Lange is my favorite. The background is a studium, which seems an old town day after raining. For me, the girl (or maybe boy) chasing the car is a punctum, which makes me think why she is running toward car.

This is a photo I took this morning, when the sun rose. I took this at 7am from the 6th floor of Talbot. Punctum in this photo is the sun for me. It still remains even I close my eyes. Chapel and other building works well as Studium.

Punctum- Drew Johnson

This is a photograph from 1x.com. The overall feel of it, or the studium gives a off a generally creepy and weird feeling. The punctum for me is that the man's feet are off the ground making it seem like he is perched on the stool just like the crow. Another punctum is that the crow has a letter wrapped around its leg. It's mysterious and keeps me interested.

This is a photograph a sculpture in the painting studio. The studium is a feeling of childhood being watched over. The punctum for me is the tattered edges where the door is cut. The edges give the picture uncertainty or a "work in progress" feel.

Punctum

This image was taken in Cinque Terre, Italy from the balcony of the small apartment I stayed in. The punctum for me is the small orange buoys floating in the water. They draw your attention to the water in the small inlet and raise questions as to their purpose. Do they serve a safety purpose for swimmers? Are they used for fishing?

This image by Dorothea Lange presents a more personal punctum. The wrinkled and sun-dried knuckles of the cotton picker "prick" me in the sense that they remind me of my grandfather's hands.

Studium and Punctum

I am very interested in Sally Mann's "At Twelve" series. The girl on the car is somewhat of a "normal" photo - it's the "DOOM" written in dust that really sets it off and makes me want to investigate the purpose of the photo. The butterfly net also seems oddly out of place and may also function as a punctum.

Minor White

I really like this photograph by Minor White. The studium of this photograph is a little person and his interaction (and others of him) with the flowers in the vase. The punctum of this photograph is the man that is in similar focus to the main subject of the picture (the little person, his sandwich, and the flowers) and his demeaning stare. It leads my eyes to focus on the main aspects of the photograph, and encompasses what Minor White is attempting to convey in the photo.

Graffiti

This is a picture of some graffiti on the old Berlin wall in Germany that I visited last year on its 20th anniversary. The studium of this photograph is the graffitied man using a spray can. The punctum of this photograph for me is are the twinkles that appear right at the beginning of the spray. They draw my eye in first with its contrast against the black background.

Studium and Punctum

In this picture from the "at twelve" series by Sally Mann, the punctum for me is the girl's feet. The way that she is holding her feet adds like a playful innocence to the portrait.

This is a picture that I took a while ago. The punctum for me is the little candy cane because it stands out and it is like it doesn't belong with all the candles, leaving kind of a sense of loneliness about it.

Kelley B Photos

Above: I love this photo by Imogen Cunningham (of Martha Graham).  I love the emotion that shines through and the shadows across the photo.  The punctum for me is the shadow under the cheek bone on the right side of the photo.

Below, this is a photo of when I got my wisdom teeth out.  The punctum for me is the small shiny bell in the front part of the photo.

Studium and Punctum (By Jessie)

(Took this picture while riding the bus this weekend)
The Punctum in this image is the open land because it seem like it would be frighting to come home to this house a night when its dark not knowing whats around or who might be around. Studium is self explanatory.

(This image is by the Photographer Weegee)

The Punctum in this image would be the rising water and how it looks like its going to start to flood the city. The water coming up from the road would be one of the images that would stand out if would close my eyes.

Studium and Punctum

This is an image from Minor White: Untitled, 72 North Union Street, Rochester, NY. The punctum for me is the cracks and chipping paint on the closed door. It makes me think that something may be locked in there, especially since they lead up to the deadbolt.

This is a photo I took of a royal tomb in a church we visited on vacation. The punctum for me is the darkness in the ruffles of the queen's collar. It's incredible to me that the sculptors carved so deeply.

Studium and Punctum - Hannah

This is a photo of a piece of my reliquary I made for woodworking.  The punctum for me is the rusty bolts I used for the center of the flowers.

This is Robert Frank Coffee Shop 1956.  The punctum for me is the expression of the man closest to the foreground.  He just looks so angry/intense about something.

Studium and Punctum

This is a picture of one of the dogs I walk at the Humane Society. The studium is the dog in the play area that is covered with snow. To me, the punctum is the choke collar that Nicky (the dog) is wearing. It makes me think of how strong this dog is and how my family used to use one on my old lab because she was too strong for any of us to walk.

This is a photograph taken by Minor White titled "Warehouse Area." The studium is a man walking in the street holding a sheet behind him that is being blown in the wind. To me, the punctum is the weed growing in front of the door. It makes me think how it has been since the door was last opened.

This is an image by Minor White called Snowdoor.  The punctum for me is the speckled snow.  The sharpness of the image and the snow sticking to the door really captures my attention.

This is my image that I took over the weekend.  The punctum for me is the ladybug which may not come as a surprise.  The interesting and ironic thing is that it seemed to want to stay on the windows key.  Ladybugs always seem to find a window when they are stuck inside.

Studium and Punctum

This image is from a home invasion we had. It shows studium through its normal object function, the image is about the shades. The punctum is seen with the broken shades and blood splatters, which then gives a sense of emotion to the reader.
This is from Sally Mann. The image shows Punctum because the childs swollen eye is the part that stands out the most, one could question the reason for it and to everyone there would be a different assumption. The child itself is the studium, it is the aboutness of the image.

Liza Fowler - Studium and Punctum

This is a photo taken by Sally Mann called, Candy Cigarette: 1989. For me, the punctum in the image is the ponytail of the little girl who is standing off to the side. The curls and tangles of her hair draw me into the image and strike feelings of the disorder/messiness of being a little girl.

The punctum I see in this photo is my dog's nails. The sharpness of his nails against the otherwise soft textures and overall gentle feeling of the photo draws me in and brings my focus there.

Lauren Sabo Studium & Punctum

The punctum in this first image for me is the golden dog identification tag as well as the scarf (i.e. both accessories around the neck).
The studium in Edward Weston's photograph is that of the individual before the camera and the capacity of the subject. The punctum for me however is the plate of fruit in the image that draws my eye to it every time and make me think deeper into the meaning of the image.
